The Paternal Integrate and it's role in the analysing situation:

Jan Abram proposes the notion of a 'paternal integrate' that constitutes the earliest form of the father in the psyche of the newborn. This concept interprets and extends Winnicott's very late proposal of the father as a whole object from the start of psychic life. Following Winnicott’s ‘there’s no such thing as a baby’, André Green suggested that ‘there’s no such thing as a mother and baby’ and proposed the notion of the ‘other of the object’ in the mother’s mind.This essay argues that the ‘other’ is de facto ‘paternal’. 

Jan Abram PhD is a Training Analyst and Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society in full time private practice in London. She is Visiting Professor of the Psychoanalysis Unit, University College London and Visiting Lecturer in the Adult Department, The Tavistock Clinic.

She lectures and teaches internationally. In 2016 she was visiting Professor at the University of Kyoto.

Between 1989 and 2000 Jan Abram worked for the Squiggle Foundation and her seminal book The Language of Winnicott: A Dictionary of Winnicott’s Use of Words (1^st edition 1996; 2^nd edition 2007) was awarded Outstanding Academic Book of the Year in 1997.

Her forthcoming book co-written with Bob Hinshelwood is: The Clinical Paradigms of Melanie Klein and Donald Winnicott: comparisons and dialogues. She is preparing a selection of her publications - The Surviving Object: Psychoanalytic Essays on Psychic Survival.
