WPF - The shame of being oneself: Internalised homophobia and shame within sexual identity

  • 16 Jun 2018
  • 10:00 - 16:00
  • WPF Therapy 23 Magdalen Street, London SE1 2EN

CPD Programme with David Richards

  • Would you like to increase your knowledge and awareness of the meaning and impact of internalised homophobia as a concept relevant to clinical practice?
  • Are you interested in developing self-awareness around attitudes to do with sexual orientation and the existence of internalised homophobia, and to address challenges of working with such shame in the consulting room?

This workshop will explore the concept of internalised homophobia and its relevance as an idea for both LGB (lesbian, gay and bisexual) and heterosexual people. It can be understood as a process whereby negative social and environmental beliefs and attitudes about homosexuality and same sex attraction are taken in by the individual and experienced as part of the self. This can lead to shameful feelings affecting both individual and relational life, and cause suffering which may be extremely difficult to acknowledge or articulate. In particular this workshop will explore the impact on the therapist in working with shame in the consulting room. It will be valuable for participants to being examples of their own clinical work and experience to discuss.
