AI essentials - some of what you need to know about AI, but were too afraid to ask ChatGPT - Richard Miller

This presentation will support psychotherapists in achieving a basic understanding of AI and its potential effects on practice.  As AI becomes an integral part of our everyday lives it’s crucial to stay ahead of the curve and adapt to the changes it presents. The aim is to empower you with a foundational knowledge of AI tools and kick start your journey towards thinking carefully and acting ethically about it. This will raise the collective bar of awareness of ethical considerations and data privacy issues associated with the technology that now plays a large role in how counselling is delivered. Participants are not required to have pre-existing technical knowledge of AI or computing. Join in so we can work together and be well-prepared to navigate these new challenges.

Biography

Richard Miller works as a counsellor, supervisor and trainer and AI ethicist working in private practice in Fife, Scotland, and is co-director of the Scottish Institute of Emotion-Focused Therapy. He is currently working as the AI and digital ethics consultant on the BACP ethical framework review and has delivered AI training to members of BACP, IACP and via eventsonline.co.uk.

Context

As therapists, we share a fundamental concern for human welfare and the alleviation of suffering. The rapid development of AI, and potentially AGI, represents both a profound opportunity and a serious risk to that welfare. It is essential for our profession to raise its collective awareness, ensuring we are prepared not only to safeguard against potential harms but also to harness the positive possibilities these technologies offer. In doing so, we must remain committed to protecting the irreplaceable value of genuine human connection at the heart of therapeutic work.
